🏠 Council Tax in Edinburgh
If you are living in the UK for more than a few months, you may need to pay Council Tax for your flat or house.
Council Tax is a local government tax that helps pay for public services such as roads, schools, rubbish collection, libraries, the police and the NHS. The amount you pay depends on:
– the value of the property
– the council tax band (A–H)
– how many adults live there
– whether any exemptions or discounts apply
If you are sharing a flat, we recommend checking the Council Tax rules before you move in.
Do students have to pay?
If you are a full-time student, you may be exempt from paying Council Tax or eligible for a discount. You will need a confirmation of study letter from ECS Scotland — please ask our office team and we’ll be happy to provide it.
