💬 What to Expect in the IELTS Speaking Test
The IELTS Speaking test is a face-to-face conversation with an examiner and lasts around 11–14 minutes. It is divided into three parts:
1. Part 1: Introduction and Interview – Questions about familiar topics such as hobbies, daily routines or your hometown.
2. Part 2: Long Turn – You’ll be given a task card with a topic and have one minute to prepare. Then you’ll speak for 1–2 minutes.
3. Part 3: Discussion – A more in-depth conversation related to the topic in Part 2.
✅ Top Tips from Our IELTS Teachers
1. Be Natural, Not Perfect
The IELTS Speaking test is not about giving memorised answers or using overly complex vocabulary. The examiner wants to hear how well you can communicate naturally and fluently. Focus on clarity and expressing your ideas clearly rather than trying to sound “perfect”.
2. Expand Your Answers
Don’t give one-word or very short answers. Try to give reasons, examples or opinions when appropriate. For example:
• ❌ “Yes, I like travelling.”
• ✅ “Yes, I really enjoy travelling, especially to places with beautiful nature. Last year, I went hiking in the Scottish Highlands—it was incredible!”
3. Practise Thinking Aloud
In the test, it’s okay to take a moment to think. You can use phrases like:
• “That’s an interesting question…”
• “Let me think for a moment…”
This shows you’re thinking carefully and gives you time to organise your thoughts.
4. Work on Fluency and Pronunciation
Speaking clearly and smoothly is just as important as using correct grammar or vocabulary. Practice speaking regularly—try recording yourself, speaking with a study partner or even talking to yourself about a daily topic.
5. Use a Range of Vocabulary and Grammar
Try to show variety in how you speak. Use different verb tenses where appropriate and include linking words like 'however', 'on the other hand', 'for example', or 'in my opinion'. This makes your answers more interesting and helps your score for lexical resource and grammatical range.
