🍁 A Victoria sponge, autumn colours and some pickleball: Autumn at ECS Scotland
New courses, new conversations
We welcomed students on our Experience Edinburgh and General English group courses — each with its own pace and purpose. While one group explored English through real-life conversations outside in the city, the other spent time inside in the classroom discussing the language of health, wellbeing and the body, from gym habits to global health trends.
Autumn walks and quiet corners
Outside the classroom, students have been making the most of this season. Golden leaves, crisp air and afternoon light have made Edinburgh a beautiful place to walk and talk in English. One favourite route this week: a peaceful stretch along the Water of Leith, full of colour, birdlife and calm.
We’re always discovering new places to practise everyday conversation — sometimes just a few streets away from the school.
Pub chats and pickleball
On Tuesday, we headed to the pub for an authentic local experience (real conversations + real chips = real learning). And in the spirit of trying something new, Flora had her first go at pickleball. It really is a sport and surprisingly popular too! We’ve been hearing more and more about it from students.
Comfort food, coffee chats and seasonal change
As the days grow cooler and darker, the ECS coffee room has taken on a new autumnal rhythm. Warm drinks and baked potatoes are a must at this time of year. Even the decorations have changed — with leaves, pumpkins and a gentle Halloween touch in the air.
This is one of our favourite times of year to be in the school: soft light, good food and friendly company.
Celebrations and connections
We also had a very special moment this week: The Principal's birthday. There was homemade Victoria sponge (thank you Flora) and lots of messages online from past students— a lovely reminder of how many people stay connected to ECS Scotland after their course ends.
Jane has been teaching both online and in person this week. While Laura was away in Bath for a few days, visiting colleagues and soaking up some Roman history.
A perfect October mix
So, what’s it like to learn English at ECS Scotland in October? A bit of cake, new expressions and conversations that take you somewhere new — in every sense.
