As the leaves turn red and gold around Edinburgh, our students have been making the most of the season learning English both indoors and out.

This week, we welcomed learners on our Experience Edinburgh, English with Yoga and Wellbeing and Communication at Work courses. Each group brought a different kind of energy to the school: from mindful morning stretches to lively discussions about idioms, traditions and cultural beliefs.

In class, we explored some well-known superstitions and proverbs. The kind of language that often hides small pieces of everyday wisdom. For example:

  • “Touch wood” for good luck (a superstition many still follow in Scotland!)
  • “A stitch in time saves nine” — meaning it’s better to fix a small problem early.
  • “It never rains but it pours” — a saying that feels particularly true during a Scottish autumn.

Outside the classroom, students on our Yoga and Wellbeing course have been putting those ideas into practice. Through learning to pause, reset and stay present before the busy festive season begins. Our Experience Edinburgh group spent their afternoons exploring the city’s quieter corners, from the Water of Leith to hidden wynds and closes, where stories and superstitions often meet.

That’s exactly the kind of learning we love at ECS Scotland — natural, personal and rooted in real experience.
