English in the City
ECS Scotland’s monthly bulletin
A monthly look at learning English in Edinburgh, life in Scotland and seasonal moments around the city for adults planning a language-learning stay in Scotland.
July is one of the most enjoyable times of year to learn English in Edinburgh.
Long evenings, green parks, outdoor cafés and summer events create natural opportunities to continue using English beyond the classroom.
For adult learners, it is a month that combines structured learning with the simple pleasure of spending more time outdoors and discovering the city at a relaxed pace.
Learning English in Edinburgh this July
One of the advantages of learning English in Edinburgh during July is that the city naturally encourages you to spend time outside.
A typical day might begin with English lessons, continue with a walk through the city and finish with a conversation over coffee or an evening exploring a new neighbourhood.
At ECS Scotland, learning is not limited to the classroom. The city itself becomes part of the experience, providing opportunities to listen, ask questions, share opinions and build confidence using English in real situations.
Course spotlight: Experience Edinburgh
Our Experience Edinburgh course combines classroom learning with guided exploration of the city.
Students practise English while discussing places, describing what they see, asking questions and sharing ideas. Rather than learning about English in isolation, they use it throughout the day for a real purpose.
July's long daylight hours make this a particularly enjoyable time to explore Edinburgh while continuing to develop your communication skills.
Tree of the month: Holly
As a Green Standard School, we enjoy celebrating Scotland's native trees throughout the year.
Our tree for July is holly. Although it is often associated with winter, holly remains green throughout the year and can be found in parks, gardens and woodland areas across Scotland.
One of the pleasures of learning English in Edinburgh is spending time outdoors and noticing the details that make Scotland unique. Trees, wildlife and green spaces often become part of conversations, walks and everyday discoveries during a student's stay.
Edinburgh this month
July brings a relaxed summer atmosphere to Edinburgh.
The city's parks and gardens are full of colour, outdoor cafés become gathering places and long evenings encourage people to spend more time outside. The Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival also arrives later in the month, bringing live music to venues across the city.
For English learners, this means more opportunities to experience the city, meet people and continue conversations beyond the classroom.
Conversation starter
One of the best ways to build confidence in English is to share your opinions and experiences.
If you are visiting Edinburgh this July, try discussing these questions with a classmate or teacher.
• What has surprised you most about Edinburgh so far?
• Which place in the city would you recommend to another visitor?
• Have you discovered a favourite café, park or neighbourhood?
• What would you like to explore before leaving Edinburgh?
Walk of the month: Water of Leith
Our July walk follows part of the Water of Leith between Dean Village and Stockbridge.
The route combines leafy pathways, historic buildings and views of the river, offering a quieter side of Edinburgh just a short distance from the city centre.
It is the sort of walk that rewards slowing down. Along the way you might hear different accents, stop for a coffee or find yourself describing what you can see in English. These everyday moments are often where language learning becomes most natural.
Scottish word of the month: blether
A blether is a friendly informal chat.
Example:
"We had a good blether over coffee."
At ECS Scotland, coffee breaks are often where the best blethers begin. They give students time to relax, get to know each other and practise English in a natural and supportive environment.
Looking ahead
August will bring a different energy to Edinburgh as festival season arrives.
July, however, offers a chance to experience the city at a slightly gentler pace. Long evenings, green spaces and everyday conversations create the perfect setting for building confidence in English while enjoying everything Edinburgh has to offer.
