Learning English through language, culture and adventure 🌍📚
At ECS Scotland, we welcome students from all over the world — each with their own reasons for learning English and their own unique journey. Today, we’re delighted to share the story of Ogan from Japan, who spent 12 weeks with us in Edinburgh and made the most of every moment.
From day one, Ogan threw herself into both language learning and cultural discovery. She stayed with a local host family, which gave her a fantastic opportunity to practise real English every day and experience genuine Scottish hospitality.
But her learning didn’t stop at the front door.
Exploring Scotland with curiosity and confidence
Ogan spent her weekends exploring the Scottish countryside — from Loch Tay to the historic village of Culross. She even took the chance to travel into England, broadening her experience of British culture and language.
Along the way, she:
- Sampled traditional Scottish food (yes, even haggis!)
- Learned about local whisky production
- Listened to stories and history from people she met on her travels
Her fearless, curious attitude to language learning was truly inspiring — proving that the best way to learn English is by living it.

More than just English lessons
Ogan’s experience reminds us that learning English isn’t only about grammar and vocabulary. It’s about:
- Building confidence in everyday conversations
- Making connections with people from around the world
- Discovering new places and perspectives
“I learned English in the classroom, but also at the dinner table, on the train, and in the Highlands. Scotland became my second classroom.”
