What vocabulary do I need to know?

Learn English vocabulary

Everything is useful, so start with what interests you and do it in English!  Do you love watching cookery programmes on TV?  You could try to find one in English on YouTube.  Or do you avidly read the football reports online?  Perhaps the BBC sports website has coverage of the same match in English.  Have you got an exciting hobby like sailing or kayaking?  There are plenty of holiday companies in the UK and other English-speaking countries where you can join a group and have adventures together.

Why do you need to speak English?

Think about the times when you use English and what you usually talk about, can you express yourself in every situation? Where do you get stuck for words?  Make sure you have a least the keywords for the main topics you like to discuss. Then add new vocabulary to the topic area as you learn it and use it.

Use English outside the classroom

Here at ECS Scotland, we encourage our students to use English outside the classroom, because it is easier to remember something which is directly relevant to yourself and your interests.  In class, we cover a wide range of topics, and the students help to decide what those topics will be.

Remember also that Scotland is a wonderful tourist destination, and during your stay, you can take advantage of the fantastic cultural, sporting and natural highlights it has to offer, all in English!

Visit Edinburgh after your classes and practise English with other students
