A typical week at ECS Scotland combines classroom learning with opportunities to explore Edinburgh and continue using English in everyday situations. Our aim is to help you to use English naturally throughout the day rather than only during lessons.

This week included presentations in class, Experience Edinburgh group seeing nature and trying new food, a homemade tiramisu at coffee break, social time in the city and a few small updates around the school following our recent British Council inspection.

Learning at ECS Scotland

Our small classes (Maximum 5 students) allow everyone plenty of opportunities to speak, listen and participate throughout the day. This week included lessons, discussions and presentations across our different courses, with students arriving from a range of countries and professional backgrounds.

Coffee break is often one of the liveliest parts of the morning, with students and teachers gathering together before returning to class. This week, one student brought in a homemade tiramisu, which was enjoyed alongside tea, coffee and conversation.

Experience Edinburgh

Our Experience Edinburgh course combines classroom learning with guided visits around the city. The aim is to continue using English while discovering more of Edinburgh’s history, culture and neighbourhoods.

Learning does not stop when students leave the classroom. Questions, observations and conversations from the city often become part of lessons later in the week. By seeing places in person often makes new vocabulary easier to remember and gives students fresh topics to discuss back in class.

Experience Edinburgh

Life in Edinburgh

The brighter weather this week made it easier to spend time outdoors before and after lessons. Edinburgh changes noticeably throughout the year, so even students returning for a second visit often discover something new.

Young Street will soon become even busier as filming begins for the latest Rebus television series. The nearby Oxford Bar, long associated with Ian Rankin’s detective novels, is only a short walk from ECS Scotland and is one of many places students may recognise while exploring the New Town.

Learning English in Edinburgh also means experiencing what is happening in the city at that particular moment, from television filming to changing weather and seasonal events.

A few updates around the school

This week, a new pin was added to our world map for Canada. This also sparked a conversation about the country’s two official languages, English and French.

These displays provide a reminder of the international community that passes through ECS Scotland each year and the many different journeys that bring students to Edinburgh.

Social programme and everyday moments

Our weekly social programme gives students another opportunity to spend time together outside class. This week’s pub social brought together students and teachers for an informal evening of conversation in the city centre.

These activities help students continue using English in a relaxed environment while getting to know Edinburgh and their classmates a little better.

A final thought

No two weeks at ECS Scotland are exactly the same. Some weeks are busier than others and every group brings different experiences, conversations and perspectives.

This week included lessons, city walks, film-location preparations, homemade tiramisu and plenty of opportunities to use English both inside and outside the classroom.

Sometimes it is these smaller moments that become the most memorable part of a stay in Edinburgh.

Life at ECS Scotland is our weekly snapshot of learning, teaching and everyday moments at our small English school in Edinburgh.
