Why choose Edinburgh for Bildungsurlaub?
Edinburgh is a city that is easy to enjoy whilst studying.
The city centre is compact enough to explore on foot, yet there is plenty to discover, including museums, galleries, parks, neighbourhoods and cultural events throughout the year.
Learning English in Edinburgh also means using English naturally throughout the day. Ordering a coffee, asking for directions, joining a social activity or visiting a museum all become opportunities to practise communication in real situations.
One of Edinburgh’s strengths is the balance it offers. Within a short distance of the school, you can walk beside the Water of Leith, visit Portobello Beach or spend time in one of the city’s many gardens.
For adults taking educational leave, Edinburgh often provides a comfortable rhythm of focused study, cultural discovery and independent exploration.
What does a typical day look like?
A typical day has a clear structure, giving you a routine whilst leaving plenty of time to enjoy Edinburgh at your own pace.
09:00–11:00 – Speaking and listening
The day begins with small-group speaking and listening lessons.
Classes focus on practical communication skills, discussions and topics connected to everyday life, work and current events.
11:00–11:30 – Coffee break
Coffee break is an important part of the day.
Students and teachers gather together to chat informally and continue using English in a relaxed setting.
11:30 onwards – Your chosen course
Depending on your programme, you may continue with:
- Experience Edinburgh (11:30–15:15)
- General English (11:30–13:30)
- Communication at Work (11:30–13:30)
Afternoons
Some students add 1:1 lessons to focus on presentations, meetings, pronunciation or specific professional goals.
Others use the time to explore Edinburgh independently, visit museums and galleries or simply enjoy experiencing the city at their own pace.

All group classes have a maximum of five students.
Smaller groups mean there are regular opportunities to participate, ask questions and contribute to discussions throughout the day.
Classes are multi-level (B1–C1), which reflects real life. You learn to communicate with people from different countries, professional backgrounds and experiences.
Our students are adults aged 30 and over. Some are taking educational leave, whilst others are combining English learning with travel or personal development.

What our students say
Sometimes the easiest way to understand Bildungsurlaub is to hear from someone who has already experienced it.
Students often describe enjoying the balance between structured learning and the freedom to explore Edinburgh independently.
The opportunity to use English throughout the day, rather than only during lessons, is frequently mentioned as one of the most valuable parts of their stay.
Could I extend my Bildungsurlaub experience?
Educational leave can also be an opportunity to experience more of the UK.
If you would like to experience different parts of Britain whilst continuing to use English every day, our Great British Language Journey combines time in Bath and Edinburgh.
The course explores two very different cities, allowing you to experience different accents, histories and cultural traditions whilst continuing to develop your communication skills.
It is particularly suited to adults who enjoy combining language learning with travel and cultural discovery.
