Our school is a Georgian era property in the centre of Edinburgh

Courses and levels

When can I start a course?

You can usually start any Monday, depending on availability and your level.

How many weeks is each course?

You can study for one week or several months. Many students choose 2–4 weeks for a short, intensive English course.

What is the minimum age for students?

ECS Scotland is an adult-only school. The minimum age is 30 years old.

Which course is best for me?

That depends on your goals:

  • General English if you want to improve everyday communication and fluency.
  • Communication at Work if you need English for your job, meetings and communicating in an international environment.
  • Experience Edinburgh if you want to combine refreshing your English with exploring the city.
How many students are there in each group?

Our classes are small — a maximum of 5 students per group. This gives you plenty of time to speak and receive personal feedback.

What time do classes start and finish?

Morning classes usually run from 09:00 - 11:00 and 11.30 - 13:30, with a short break. Afternoon times depend on which course you choose.

Can I change my course once I’ve started?

If your needs change, we’ll do our best to adapt your programme. Just speak to the Principal or email the school [email protected] if you need to change your course.

How many levels are there at ECS Scotland?

We teach from Elementary (A2) right up to Advanced (C2).

  • At very low levels (A2) and very high levels (C2), we usually offer 1:1 lessons only, not group classes. This gives students the focused support they need at the beginning of their English journey or the chance to master English to an extremely high level.
  • Our group classes are aimed at students from B1 to C1 (intermediate to advanced). These are mixed-level groups.

There are real benefits to mixed-level learning. You will be challenged by classmates who are slightly stronger, while also gaining confidence when you can explain something to others. This creates a more natural, communicative classroom, similar to real-life situations where people always have different levels of English.

How do I know my current level of English?

Before your course begins, you can complete a general online placement test if you want. We give everyone a short online interview (via zoom) with one of our teachers or the Principal. This indicates your speaking and listening level in English.

At the end of your course, you'll receive a certificate indicating your speaking and listening level of English.

Host family accommodation for English students in Edinburgh

Accommodation

Can you organise my accommodation?

Yes. Most of our students stay with carefully selected local host families that have worked with us for many years. This is one of the best ways to practise English outside the classroom. Living with a host means you can experience everyday Scottish life. Such as, sharing meals, learning about local traditions and places to visit. Another bonus is the option to have your own private bathroom. Breakfast and 3 evening meals are usually included, which also helps keep costs down.

We will organise a host family for you free of charge as part of your booking. All our hosts are checked and supported by the school and they live within easy travel distance of ECS Scotland, many are just a short bus ride (20-40 minutes depending on traffic) or a 20-30 minute walk away.

Please note that ECS Scotland only organises homestay accommodation. Any other kind of accommodation you wish to book would need to be researched and booked by you directly.

Life at ECS Scotland

Why is ECS Scotland different?

We are a small, family-run school in the heart of Edinburgh and we have been welcoming students for over 30 years. Our maximum group size is just five students, which means every lesson gives you plenty of time to speak, ask questions and get individual feedback.

Because of our size, we can offer a truly tailored learning experience. In addition to General English, we provide specialised courses in areas such as legal, medical, academic, aviation, engineering, environmental, pharmacy and physiotherapy English. These courses are designed to give professionals the language skills they need for their specific field.

At ECS Scotland, you won’t be lost in a large class. You’ll be part of a small, friendly group where your progress really matters.

Does the school close on public holidays?

ECS Scotland is open all year round, except for a short break from 13 December to 4 January over the festive holiday period. Classes run as normal at all other times on Mondays to Fridays.

Where do the classes take place?

All classroom lessons take place at our school on Young Street, right in the centre of Edinburgh. The school is in a traditional Georgian building, just a few minutes’ walk from Princes Street and the main attractions of the city.

Some of our courses also include lessons outside the classroom. For example:

This mix of settings gives you the chance to practise English in both a traditional classroom and real-life environments. These courses are designed to help you practise English in everyday situations.

Frequently asked about Edinburgh and Scotland

Where is Edinburgh?

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, in the north of the United Kingdom, about 410 miles (626 km) from London. The city sits on a similar latitude to Moscow, Copenhagen and Sapporo in Japan but thanks to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream, its climate is much milder than you might expect. Winters are cool rather than extreme and summers are pleasantly warm without being too hot.

It’s also easy to reach: travelling from London takes just over one hour by plane or around 4.5 hours by train.

Why should I choose to study English in Edinburgh?

Edinburgh is a safe, friendly and international city. It is home to festivals, castles, galleries and beautiful landscapes. It’s the perfect mix of history, culture and modern life.

When is the best time to come to Edinburgh?

You can study with us at any time of year and each season offers something different.

  • Summer is lively and exciting, with world-famous festivals and long light evenings.
  • Autumn and winter are quieter and more atmospheric, with golden leaves, festive markets, exhibitions and spectacular light shows.
  • Spring is fresh and green, a time when gardens and parks burst into life and the city feels full of energy.

Whatever the season, there is always plenty to see and do after class.

What is the weather like in Edinburgh?

The weather in Edinburgh is generally mild, cool and changeable. You might experience sunshine, wind and rain all in the same day. Despite its reputation, the city actually receives less annual rainfall than Rome, New York or Frankfurt.

If you are wondering what to wear in Scotland, the key is to dress in layers. A warm jumper, light waterproof jacket and comfortable shoes will prepare you for most days. In summer, evenings are long and light but it’s still wise to carry a jacket. In winter, a good coat, scarf and gloves will help you enjoy the cosy atmosphere of the city.

This is how to dress for Scottish weather: think practical, flexible and ready for adventure. If you pack layers and a waterproof, the changing climate will never stop you from enjoying your time in Edinburgh.

Will I be able to understand the Scottish accent?

Yes. Our teachers are very experienced in helping international students understand spoken English. They always speak clearly and at a speed that is appropriate for your level. They will rephrase, give examples and check your understanding, so you never feel lost.

In Edinburgh, the local accent is generally clear and easy to follow. Many students tell us they were surprised by how understandable everything is. Outside the classroom, you will also find that Scottish people are friendly and patient and usually happy to repeat or explain if needed.

Learning in Edinburgh means you’ll improve your English while also gaining confidence in understanding a variety of accents, which is an important skill for using English internationally.

Is Edinburgh a safe city?

Yes. Edinburgh has a welcoming atmosphere for international visitors.

Edinburgh is consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in the UK. Police Scotland’s most recent annual report (2024–25) shows reductions in crime compared to previous years. While every city has challenges, Edinburgh benefits from strong community policing and is a safe and friendly place for students.

Are there any famous Scots?

Yes. Scotland has given the world many well-known people across different fields. Writers such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Walter Scott, Val McDermid and Muriel Spark, inventors like Alexander Graham Bell and modern sports stars including Andy Murray and Laura Muir.

Scotland is also home to internationally recognised performers from actors like Sam Heughan and Tilda Swinton, to singers such as Lulu and Annie Lennox.

More frequently asked questions about Scotland

Do I need a visa to visit Scotland?

That depends on your nationality and the length of your stay. You can check the latest requirements on the UK Government website. ECS Scotland can provide documents to support your student visa application.

What language do people speak in Scotland?

English is the main language. You’ll possibly hear Scots and Scottish Gaelic, especially in the Highlands and Islands, but everyone speaks English and you’ll be understood wherever you go.

What currency does Scotland use?

The currency is the Pound Sterling (£). Scottish banks also issue their own banknotes.

Most places in Edinburgh accept debit and credit cards, including cafés, shops, buses and trains. Contactless payment is widely used, you can simply tap your card or phone when travelling on Lothian Buses and the Edinburgh Trams. Train tickets can also be bought online, through the Scotrail app or at the station using a card.

It’s useful to carry a small amount of cash for very small shops, markets or rural areas but you’ll find that card payments are the easiest and most common way to pay during your stay.

What is the food like in Scotland?

Scotland is famous for traditional dishes like haggis, neeps and tatties, fresh Scottish salmon and of course whisky. But there’s much more to try. You’ll find sweet treats such as shortbread, tablet (a crumbly fudge-like sweet) and the famous cranachan dessert made with oats, raspberries, cream and honey.

Edinburgh also has a wide choice of international restaurants, vegetarian/ vegan cafés and modern Scottish dining. Farmers’ markets and street food stalls are popular and you’ll discover local favourites such as Scotch pies, Stornoway black pudding and even the legendary square sausage if you’re curious!

For students on a budget, supermarkets offer plenty of choice and many host families enjoy introducing you to home-cooked Scottish meals.

What should I pack for my trip?

Bring layers you can add or remove, plus a waterproof jacket and comfortable shoes for walking. Don’t forget an adaptor if your country uses a different plug type (UK is 3-pin).

How can I travel around Scotland?

Trains and buses connect most cities and towns. From Edinburgh you can easily reach Glasgow, Stirling, the Highlands and the coast for weekend trips. Many students enjoy discovering Scotland by train.

Is it expensive to study and live in Scotland?

Edinburgh is more affordable than London and daily life can be adapted to your budget. Staying with a host family includes meals, which keeps costs down. Buying food from a supermarket and making your own packed lunch will also help reduce daily expenses.

Public transport in Edinburgh is good value, with a single bus or tram journey costing around £2 and unlimited daily travel for £5. Many students walk to school, which saves money and lets you enjoy the city on foot.

Cultural life can also be affordable: the National Museum of Scotland and the National Galleries are free to enter and the city’s hills, parks (like the Royal Botanic Gardens) and coastal paths are open all year round at no cost.

Eating out can be more expensive but you’ll find plenty of cafés and restaurants offering lunch specials for around £8–£10. A takeaway coffee is usually £3–£4 and supermarket meal deals cost about £4–£5. With a little planning, it’s easy to balance your budget while still enjoying the best of Edinburgh.
